Mit gleich zwei Veröffentlichungen macht der wohl bekannteste Jazzgitarrist der Gegenwart gerade auf sich aufmerksam — und zwar zwei ebenso außergewöhnlichen wie spannenden.

Da ist zum einen das fast zwei Jahrzehnte alte Album "Question & Answer", das in einer wunderbaren, neu gemasterten und entsprechend brillant klingenden Version neu aufgelegt wurde.

Wo "Question & Answer" gewissermaßen das Werk eines All-Star-Trios ist, handelt es sich bei "Upojenie" eher um ein lokal zwar enorm erfolgreiches, aber im "Rest der Welt" nahezu unbekanntes Album; einen Schatz also, der jetzt gerade gehoben wurde. Mit der populären polnischen Sängerin und Keyboarderin Anna Maria Jopek nahm PAT METHENY 2002 ein Album auf, unterstützt von einer Gruppe polnischer Musiker.

Anna Maria Jopek studierte sowohl klassisches als auch Jazz-Piano; sie verbindet Elemente aus Jazz und Rock mit einer Verträumtheit, die fast an Enya erinnert. Und sie tut das mit einer großen Tiefe und Gewissenhaftigkeit, die PAT METHENY sofort angezogen hat: "Ihr gesamtes Leben hat sie immer versucht, die BESTEN Töne zu spielen, gut zu klingen. In diesem Sinne ist sie sehr wie ich, und das ist der Grund, warum ich mit ihr arbeiten wollte. Weil sie die Musik einfach liebt."

The 2002 album Upojenie, now being released domestically for the first time, may be Pat Metheny’s most unique and, for many listeners, least well-known project. The guitarist collaborates with popular Polish singer and keyboardist Anna Maria Jopek backed by a group of Polish musicians. They perform re-interpretations of Metheny tunes like “Follow Me” (from Imaginary Day) and original pieces by Jopek and her husband Marcin Kydrynski, who also co-produced and supplied lyrics for Metheny’s formerly instrumental compositions. In Poland, the album was an instant hit, selling 80,000 copies in 30 days and it has well passed the 100,000 mark over there since. This North American version contains three previously unavailable bonus tracks.

Though a student of both classical piano and jazz, Jopek’s approach eludes easy classification: It contains elements of jazz, rock and an alluring, Enya-like dreaminess. As a singer, Jopek glides into the mix rather than hovering above it, and her voice blends intuitively with Metheny’s playing. Reviewing the original import, All About Jazz praised “ the intensity and creative spark” of Metheny’s performances, especially on his own re-imagined compositions: “There is a sense of extra energy infused by the different context.”

“I couldn't think of anything more inspiring, motivating and ear opening than working with Pat,” Jopek has said, and Metheny returns the compliment: "Anna is original, unique, different. She’s brave, she's modest, she's open. She's a great musician. What she's been doing all her life is just trying to play the best notes. Trying to sound good. In that particular sense she's a lot like me and that's why I decided to work with her. Because she just cares for the music.”
