After the triumphs of his debut album "The First Cut", and numerous remixes for the likes of the Stereo MC's, Skalpel, Bobby Hebb and the Dutch Rhythm Combo, "My Life At 33" is the highly anticipated second album from Dr Rubberfunk.
Taking in a variety of styles, "My Life At 33" is a journey through the music filled life of our intrepid medically monikered DJ and musician. Combining his love of live instrumentation with found sounds and a myriad of influences, the album features a number of guest vocalists and musicians, all of whom bring their own little something to the party.
If you need signposts to help you navigate this particular trip; blues, funk, hip hop, jazz, gospel, soul and disco all get a look in, but the resulting sound is more than just the sum of its parts.
The uptempo disco bass groove of "Taking Over", with its soaring vocal and sweeping strings, and the old-school block party hip hop of "Watch The Tables Turn" are guaranteed to get feet moving, but it’s not all dancefloor-driven. The laidback groove of "All Day Playing" and the late night shuffling soul of "Theme For A Latter-day Lothario", featuring Rogiérs, showcase a more understated side.
"Father’s Lament" rounds out the selection with some shimmering Hammond and testifying vocals - a reflective conclusion to an autobiographical second opus.
